1250-101 USN Essex Class LPH Decck Markings
Product Description
3 Essex class aircraft carriers were converted to helicopter carriers in the late 1950s due to the delays to the Iwo Jma class LPH entering service and the need for Air support for the Marine Amphibious groups.
This set provides markings based on the limited photographs available of the 3 ships from this time in there service life. If you have more information you would like to share to improve this set, please do. A variety of deck markings and colors were used until 1961 when the markings featured on this sheet were standardized on the LPHs of all classes (Essex, Iwo Jima, and Thestis Bay). Trimming of the landing targets will be required as different photos show different locations used from ship to ship depending on the year. The diagram shows a generic placement guide based on a US Navy painting guide. Consult photos from navsource.org or other web sites dedicated to the specific ship you wish to model.
